Day One- Demolition

Last December, I was fortunate enough to get a behind-the-scenes pass from Bellamy Homes and ABC to capture one week of an extraordinary project just outside of Charlotte, NC.  ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has been a long-running, feel good show about building deserving families bigger and better homes.  You can’t help but dab away the tears when you watch this unbelievable outpouring of generosity and love for people who truly need a miracle.  It was an amazing 7 day journey for me to say the least and I’ve been waiting to share it with you for one long year!!

For the next 7 days on the blog, I will be reliving those behind-the-scenes moments when hundreds of volunteers literally tore down the Friday family’s home to rebuild them the home of their dreams in just one week.  The final episode will air on December 10 (next Monday) when we can finally share the images inside and out of the amazing final home!

God’s timing is impeccable.  Our company is undergoing its own Extreme Makeover too and along with the images of the ABC project, I’ll be giving you back story on why we too are in need of an overhaul.  Our own big reveal will coincide with the episode on December 10 so stay tuned in the days ahead.

DAY ONE is always DEMOLITION.

The Friday family of Lincolnton, NC began fostering children years and years ago as a young married couple.  They had a modest brick home but what it lacked in space, it made up for in love. Due to the limited size of their former home though, the couple was unable to foster, love and shelter the amount of children they hoped for.  That is where ABC stepped in to provide a larger structure that would allow them to foster and even adopt more and more children.

Day One of the Extreme Makeover:Home Edition project involved tearing down their old home.  In just a matter of minutes, heavy equipment rolled over their former home and all that remained was a foundation. And an opportunity for bigger and better things.

I found myself in a similar situation with In His Image Photography by Julie.

In 2007, with a 2 year old and a 5 year old at my feet, I began taking pictures for friends.  They liked they way I interacted with their children and I enjoyed capturing special moments in their lives.  My love of photography was growing slightly beyond a hobby and I needed to come up with a name for my little business.  As a Christian, I recognize that any and all talent I may possess comes from the hands of my Father in heaven.  I wanted my company to stay focused on the source of all good things and to remind other people to celebrate the sweet blessings of life, love and family.

I prayed about it and felt In His Image would be a great name for my new business.  What I didn’t EVER imagine was that my little hobby turned business would one day grow into a larger company with employees on the payroll.  It didn’t matter to me back then that there were literally HUNDREDS of In His Image Photography companies across the country.  As long as I added “Photography by Julie”, the Secretary of State would allow us to incorporate and I was happy enough. So off I went on a little adventure into the photography world (with a VERY long company name!!)

Now, as we enter 2013, we find ourselves limited by our “little house” in ways similar to the Friday family.  Our desire is to continue to grow, bless others with our work and add more members to our company exceeds the size of our current “house”.   As hard as it is to leave In His Image behind, the time has come for a demolition of our own.

So, it is with excitement and both a heavy heart that I announce we are changing the name of our company.  As we have grown, it has become a big problem that our name is similar to many other studios.  People are always commenting that it is hard to find us on-line and often end up at another website.  If you Google  “In His Image Photography”, you will find companies matching that name in Raleigh, NC, Louisiana, Tennessee, Illinios and Idado ON PAGE ONE ALONE!!  In a world where cyber searching is king, we need a new address.

Stay tuned to the blog all week as we plan to reveal our new company name, logo, website AND announce new members to our team on December 10.  Immediately following the ABC episode, December 10 at 8 p.m., we too will reveal our bigger and better new home.

Tomorrow, we reflect on the past 5 years and reveal more about our new plans for growth.

Day Two will be all about what happens next after the dust settles.
