Field of Dreams 2012 was made possible by the following generous sponsors:
Marvin and LuAnn Scruggs, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Flashes of Hope, Noah’s Art, Split Second Sound, Party Reflections, Charlotte Checkers, The Plush Flush, Queen City Catering, Brian Bunn Films, Divine Promotional Products, Alphagraphics, Inspire Design Studio, Papa John’s at Kensington, Chik-Fil-A at Wesley Chapel, Phyllis with Face Art, and dozens of volunteers. Thank you to the tireless coordinating efforts of Anne Markey with Favor Me Events who joined forces with me back in March. Her heart for charity shined bright and I could not have pulled the event together without her and her assistant, Jenna.
Nearly 6 years ago, I got the phone call. My aunt had recently passed away from leukemia so that dreaded word, “leukemia”, stung my ears when I heard it through the phone. This time it was my sister calling to say the pediatrician wanted to run blood tests on my 3 year old niece. They suspected she might have leukemia. NO!! Children don’t get cancer, right? Wrong. 45 children are diagnosed every day in the US with pediatric cancer. That cruel word changed all of our lives in a flash.
48 hours later, my sister and her family had the diagnosis they feared. Kristen had ALL-a form of leukemia. They were packing their bags ready to basically move into a hospital room and begin chemotherapy immediately. My sister said it was all a blur. She was in and out of sleep that first night in the hospital, comforting Kristen, hearing nurses adjust new tubes/cords, etc. But the most amazing part was that she called my Mom the next day and thanked her for staying the night too. My Mom was surprised by this comment since she had not stayed with Jenn. It was right then that my sister was CONVINCED that the Holy Spirit was the one holding her that first night, calming her fears and whispering encouragement into her soul from Day 1. Jenn locked her eyes on the Savior’s healing power and that faith carried a little girl (plus her super supportive Dad and brother) back to health 27 months later. Yes, hair was lost. Bald heads became normal. Spinal taps were weekly. Clinic visits were too many. Pills were dispensed by the dozens. But God promised to see them through the awful days and HE NEVER FAILS.
As long as it is possible, I will continue to host Field of Dreams on this beautiful land owned by the Scruggs family. At least for one night, these children feel joyful and full of life. Parents who understand the anguish of the disease come together in community and gather strength from one another’s stories. Some have brain tumors, eye cancer, leukemia or lymphoma, but underneath every heavy diagnosis is a story of struggle and triumph (in very small packages). We relish in their smiles and strive to document this monumental chapter in their family’s lives through the art of photography. Of course we mix in good tunes, face painting, art stations, golf cart rides, cheerleaders and more to make it one big night of FUN!
A VERY special thanks to the following fellow photographers who donated their God-giving talent to capture priceless moments of theses children and families: Patrick Schneider, Jenny Brawley, Kelly Patterson, Crystal Stokes, Sunny Hutchinson, Vikki Johnson, Susan Kelly, Julia Beckman and Christi Falls.
Enjoy the behind-the-scenes look at our second annual Charlotte Field of Dreams. See our spot on Fox News Rising HERE and please join us next year as we continue to grow HOPE……one sunflower at a time.
This is my awesome business partner and husband, Andrew. In His Image Photography would not be where it is today without his amazing behind-the-scenes business management.
Party Reflections generously donated tables, chairs and linens to help create a wonderful atmosphere near the main field. (and the grub of course)
This little beauty in the middle is my niece, Kristen. She is healthy and HAPPY now enjoying a night with my 2 girls (her crazy cousins). Her story and remission was a glimmer of hope to so many families that night in the thick of treatment. Hang in there, dear ones, your day is coming!
Alyssa is my second in command at In His Image. Here she is holding the photography schedule and keeping the teams moving. Shooting in a muddy field isn’t your typical shoot!!
That dirty dog is my Buddy. He is normally very handsome and bright white. Let’s just say he enjoyed the mud a little too much that night. 2 baths later…he was back to his rightful title of “Dog of the Year”.
I LOVE this image of Jackson and his brother running. Jackson joined us at our first Field of Dreams event in 2011 and I loved seeing how far he has come in another year of good health
Noah’s Art had lots of fun activities for the kiddos so Nancy and Brian were a big hit! This was Noah’s Art’s second year to sponsor Field of Dreams and we are so grateful for their efforts.
Marvin is our farmer extraordinaire! He is the genius behind the sunflowers……plowing, fertilizing, planting are all his domain. He and his wife, LuAnn, have become dear friends and their generosity makes all of this possible. There is truly magic in those flowers and you cannot help but smile when you see those acres of beautiful yellow.
On a side note, Marvin also turns into a 12 year old at the site of cheerleaders. We teased him A LOT when the Charlotte Checkers Checkmates showed up so these images are for him. He makes me laugh!
Look at all those hard-working photographers!! They produced beautiful images of each and every family who attended. We hope more and more children attend every year!
The “fancy potty” was a HUGE hit with the kids!! These stalls come complete with hard wood floors and a TV- wow! Thank you Plush Flush for bringing us sanitation with style
Phyllis is a professional make-up artist here in Charlotte and also does face painting for kids’ parties. She was a huge hit and the line for her chair was always busy!
Brian Bunn is working on a promotional video for us and he was working his magic with a beautiful sunset behind. Can’t wait to see this footage!
Alyssa and Julia were my 2012 sunflower team and worked so hard for me in July. Thank you for all your enthusiasm and SWEAT to help me create wonderful images for more families!
Desiree joined us last year and when she came running up to me I was blown away at how amazing she looks! She was just beginning to grow hair back last year and look at her now. She is healthy and strong and we celebrate her recovery!!!!!! Way to go, Desiree!

See you ALL next year!!
